  17. <p>     As of last week, there was one less opportunity for young
  18. African Americans to dream of becoming the "first black"
  19. something. John Singleton, auteur of the streetwise but
  20. classically crafted Boyz N the Hood, became the first black and,
  21. at 24, the youngest nominee for Best Director in Academy-Award
  22. history--a stunning vindication of a thoughtful film that was
  23. foolishly blamed for the violence at a handful of screenings.
  24. Says Singleton: "Those who attributed the violent acts to my
  25. film probably voted for Ronald Reagan, who created the climate
  26. in which teenagers shoot each other for gold chains and
  27. sneakers." And does the work of Orson Welles--the former
  28. youngest nominee for Best Director, 26 when singled out for
  29. Citizen Kane--influence Singleton's? "What do you think? I
  30. went to film school."
